Our story
Imploding Fictions was founded by Philip Thorne and Oystein Ulsberg Brager, after graduating from the theatre directing course at Rose Bruford College, London.
It all started with their student showcase production of Hamletmachine, a show that went on to win international acclaim and tour to Egypt, Italy, France and the Netherlands.
Our second production, the English premiere of the Swiss play Norway.Today was created during a residency at the Junction in Cambridge in 2008. A year later it was revived at Southwark Playhouse in London.
In 2009 we set up Oslo International Theatre (OIT) a platform for contemporary international drama. OIT’s work featured plays by Maya van den Heuvel-Arad, Lydia Adetunji, Bruce Norris, Ewald Palmetshofer, Toshiki Okada, Jordan Seavey, Ivor Martinić, Darja Stocker, Niklas Rådström, Anja Hilling, Caryl Churchill, Wallace Shawn, Chay Yew, Sara Stridsberg, Esther Gerritsen and Martin Crimp. We brought renowned British playwright Simon Stephens to Oslo, as well as theatre and opera director Ramin Gray, for an in depth seminar week with actors, writers and directors from around the world. OIT was based at Dramatikkenshus, and Det Norske Teatret, one of Scandinavia’s largest theatres.
In 2010 we were invited to make a production for Theater Drachengasse in Vienna. The resulting show Flap and Fear won a Newcomer Award in Austria and subsequently transferred to Oslo in an expanded version.
In 2012 we presented the experimental Iranian play White Rabbit Red Rabbit, a performance event which took place in six different theatres across Oslo.
In 2013 we created the durational event The Predictions. For exactly one year performer Sammy Metcalfe from The Sleepwalk Collective, wrote one prediction every day. The 365 predictions formed the basis of a marathon show performed at Cafeteatret/Nordic Black Theatre in Oslo.
In 2014 we curated Theatre Café Festival Oslo, as part of Theatre Café Festival Europe, a project that was funded by the European Union.
2017 saw us celebrating ten years as a company, whilst launching our audio drama podcast series The Amelia Project. In 2020 the show became part of the Fable & Folly Network. By 2025 the show had reached over 10 million downloads, was a finalist at the British Podcast Awards and winner of the Discover Pods Award.
2026 has seen us move into film, with Delivery After Dark, and the multimedia project Stories That Listen Back. Our script for the thriller Dial it Up won Best Fiction Podcast Script at The Austin Film Festival 2025, and the political drama series Beaks & Bills recieved backing from the Norwegian Arts Council.
We are currently expanding our work in audio fiction, video, and live events, with new projects and collaborations to be announced soon!

As artists, freedom of speech is a core value and lies as a premise for everything we do. With freedom comes responsibility. Whilst we will always defend our right to express our opinion through art, including our right to use comedy and satire as a vehicle for criticism, we are also dedicated to exercising caution, sensitivity and respect, acknowledging the privilege that comes with the ability to use our voice in the public space.
Harassment Reporting Policy
Any instance of harassment or other unacceptable working conditions during an Imploding Fictions production or project shall be reported to the Artistic Director. If it is not favorable to report to the Artistic Director, the incident shall be reported to Imploding Fictions’ board. Names and contact details for the board shall always be available via our webpage. If it is not favorable to report to the board, we recommend contacting a relevant workers union.
